Last week, I filmed a public meeting of the Merseyside Police and Crime Panel in Huyton (which can be viewed in the three video clips above). As far as I know this is the first time a public meeting of the Merseyside Police and Crime Panel has been filmed, as the last time I tried to film one in 2014, the Chair (Cllr Frank Prendergast) refused to allow the public meeting to be filmed.

The two councillors appointed by Wirral Council to the Merseyside Police and Crime Panel are Cllr Cherry Povall (Conservative) and Cllr Tony Smith (Labour). The Panel holds the Police and Crime Commissioner for Merseyside to account (who then in turn holds Merseyside Police to account).

The Police and Crime Commissioner for Merseyside Jane Kennedy wasn’t present at the meeting, but the Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner for Merseyside Cllr Emily Spurrell was there.

During the meeting, Cllr Tony Smith expressed concern about residents from Upton having to travel from Upton to the Moreton Community Police Station in Moreton Library to make complaints about antisocial behaviour and how he felt there were less community support officers patrolling for people to talk to.

He said that these people would like the opportunity to report antisocial behaviour at Upton Police Station or to community support officers patrolling the area. Later in the meeting Cllr Tony Smith commented on the proposed community police station in the Carrbridge Centre, Woodchurch. He asked about opening times and pointed out that for some the Carrbridge Centre would be difficult to walk to.

  1. Funny when we have cut backs and need saving’s, the people on the front line always go first, never the ones at the top. and we know the Police Commissioner and Deputy will both be on a high income, so that means no more bobbies on the street or community patrols, end result anti social behaviour continures

    1. The salary for the Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner for Merseyside (for a 3 day a week job) is £31,800 a year.

The Police and Crime Commissioner for Merseyside is paid £85,000 a year.
