The proposed closure next year of two walk in centres (one in Moreton and one in New Ferry) was discussed again by councillors on Wirral Council’s Adult Care and Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee.

Dr Paula Cowan (pictured above) the Chair of the Wirral Clinical Commissioning Group explained why in her opinion that closure of the two minor illness or injuries centres at Moreton and New Ferry, but with an increase in GP appointments and a better NHS 111 service would be better for patients. Various councillors asked her questions ranging from the delay in care that an appointment system would create, whether people would actually see a GP or a different health professional, how increased demand on health services would be dealt with, how children would be dealt with at the proposed Urgent Treatment Centre, when the proposed changes would be happening, the range of different health professionals and also public transport issues.

The Committee also heard from Dr Mark Fraser (another GP) about how achievable the extra GP appointments would be, followed by Dr Mantgani and various others (who can be watched in video of the meeting below).

Adult Care and Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee (Wirral Council) (24th July 2019)

There were many questions posed by councillors to the various people who spoke. After much discussion and an adjournment the recommendation proposed by Cllr Phil Gilchrist was agreed by councillors (8 in favour with 6 against).

Unfortunately his recommendation was neither read out during the meeting nor were paper copies circulated to the press and public present.

However I am pretty certain that it was a recommendation to the Wirral & Cheshire West and Chester Joint Health Scrutiny Committee that meets in public tonight (30th July 2019) starting at 6.00 pm at Wallasey Town Hall, Brighton Street, Seacombe. The Joint Health Scrutiny Committee has the power to refer the proposed closures to the Secretary of State (government minister).
