What was the byelection result of the election of a councillor for Oxton (to Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council) in November 2021?

Polling day for the Oxton byelection of a councillor to Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council was on 25th November 2021 and after polling stations closed at 10.00 pm, ballots cast in person on polling day were then transported from the 4 polling stations in Oxton to Wirral Tennis & Sports Centre to be counted. Postal votes were also transported to the Wirral Tennis & Sports Centre (pictured above) in Bidston.
The votes were then counted and the election result was announced and the election result published on Wirral Council’s website.
The electorate in Oxton was 10,795. Out of these 10,795 possible voters, 2,447 ballot papers were issued (turnout of 22.7%). 6 ballot papers were rejected leaving 2,441 votes.
The breakdown of votes was as follows, Dr Orod Osanlou (for the Liberal Democrats) was elected with 1,666 votes under the First Past the Post (FPTP) voting system. The following three candidates were not elected. Second place was Sue Mahoney (for the Labour Party) with 460 votes. In third place was Philip Graham Merry (for the Conservatives) with 168 votes and last placed was Mary Rachel Elizabeth Heydon (for the Green Party) with 147 votes.
Dr Orod Osanlou (as he was elected in a byelection) was only elected as councillor for the remainder of the term of office of former Councillor Andy Corkhill. If Andy Corkhill hadn’t died last month (October 2021), Andy Corkhill would have remained in office as a councillor until 4th May 2023 (as he was elected in May 2019). So Dr Orod Osanlou is elected as a councillor also until 4th May 2023 (which is around a year and half).
The election of Dr Orod Osanlou increases the size of the Liberal Democrat councillor Group on Wirral Council from the existing 5 councillors to 6, however there will be no changes to the proportions of Liberal Democrat councillors on Wirral Council committees (and outside bodies) as the byelection was triggered by the death of a sitting Liberal Democrat councillor (Andy Corkhill).
