Has Cllr Chris Meaden (Rock Ferry) left the Labour Group on Wirral Council?

Cllr Steve Foulkes (middle) answers a question about the Merseyrail strike (L to R Cllr Chris Meaden, Cllr Steve Foulkes, Cllr Moira McLaughlin and Cllr Ann McLachlan) Birkenhead Constituency Committee 30th March 2017

Cllr Chris Meaden (on the left of the picture above) who is a councillor for Rock Ferry is now listed as an independent on Wirral Council’s website (previously elected as a Labour councillor). She is also one of the four councillors from Wirral Council appointed to Merseyside Fire and Rescue Authority.

This follows her fellow Rock Ferry councillor Cllr Moira McLaughlin leaving the Labour Party last year.

Whatever the reasons for it, it puts more pressure on the remaining Labour councillors on Wirral Council over aspects of their policies which remain unpopular with the voters of Wirral. Labour now have 34 out of the 66 seats on Wirral Council (plus two more who are elected as joint Labour & Co-operative Party councillors), if any more Labour councillors left it would put them at risk of losing their majority.

All twenty-two wards on the Wirral elect a councillor this May. There is growing discontent amongst the voters over increased council tax, public transport, greenbelt issues and many other issues too.

There is also the ongoing albatross for the Labour Group which is the Hoylake Golf Resort, which is due to be discussed again in less than a fortnight.
