I spent an enjoyable afternoon with the Wirral History and Heritage Association at Wallasey Town Hall on Wednesday afternoon. Joy gave an excellent lecture about Wirral’s history and how Wallasey Town Hall came into existence (and what has happened in it since) and a really in-depth look at the history of the Borough.
The Mayor showed us around the Mayor’s parlour (where she kindly offered us all a cup of tea or coffee), the Council Chamber, Round Room, Civic Hall and unfortunately at this point in the tour I had to go (missing the tour of one of the Committee Rooms). Pictures are below if you’re interested. As usual you can click on the thumbnails for a larger version.
This is in the lobby and describes how the building was used during WWI.
Every year Tam O’Shanter Urban Farm pays a pinecone as rent to Wirral Council. This is a few years of pinecone rents in the Mayor’s parlour.

hi — is there a photo of Mayor J.Pennington in the The Round Room ? you caption that there is a picture of a former Mayor in that room: the reason i ask is that hope to be in wallasey next week (17/18 nov) to take a photo ect as part of my family history (my gran-dad was Mayor J.Pennington) and i wondered if there was a photo there……
i will be contacting the town hall anyway on monday to ask but googling, your wordpress site popped-up ……….
thanks
Sadly I think the photos in the Round Room only go back to the creation of the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral in 1974, there’s a list of all the names that covers here. There are some plaques with names of Mayors in the lobby that cover the period prior to 1974 though. Here’s a link to the contact details for the Mayor’s office.
A little digging shows a John Pennington was Mayor of Wallasey from 1943 to 1945.
thanks —
My Great Grand Father, Alderman Robert Rawlinson, was Mayor of Wallasey in 1925. I live in Adelaide, South Australia. I would love information on him please. He was my mother’s, Leonora (nee Butterworth) Barton, Grand Father. Looking forward to some information, Bruce Barton.
Try following this link for some biographical information and photos on Alderman Robert Rawlinson.
Edited JB 29.10.17 removed link as link no longer works.
Oh and here’s the family tree.
