Last Friday I published 477 new households a year required on Wirral according to Office for National Statistics, not 803 new households a year as Wirral Council claims; who is right and does Wirral’s greenbelt need to change? which appears to have led to articles in the Wirral Globe, Liverpool Echo, Wirral Leaks, Planning Resource, North West Place and a piece in the Council’s newspaper Wirral View (links are below).

477 new households a year required on Wirral according to Office of National Statistics, not 803 new households a year as Wirral Council claims; who is right and does Wirral’s greenbelt need to change?

Last month I wrote a blog post querying whether the 803 new homes a year figure used by Wirral Council was correct.

Wirral Council’s ruling Labour Cabinet in July agreed to start a consultation on the Local Plan earlier this month. The Cabinet also agreed to use the 803 new homes a year figure with the conclusion being consulted on that this would require over the 15 year life of the Local Plan large areas of the Wirral that are currently in the greenbelt to be taken out of the greenbelt for the purposes of housing.

In an update to Was figure of 803 new homes a year in Wirral Council Cabinet report on the Local Plan calculated incorrectly? I’ve now found out more about both Wirral Council’s position and I’ve had an opportunity to read the statement that the Rt Hon Sajid Javid MP made last year when the 803 figure was published.

Wirral Council state that the 803 figure was based on household projections from 2016 to 2026, rather than 2018 to 2028.

I’ll start this look at how the housing requirement figure was calculated for Wirral Council’s Local Plan consultation by pointing out some good news. The housing requirement figure was calculated based on population projections. The government response to the draft National Planning Policy Framework was published last month and states on pages 26 to 27:

Yesterday evening, Cllr Chris Blakeley presented a petition on behalf of Wirral Good Dogs and Peaceful Protest Wirral Dogs Ban of 15,033 people opposed to Wirral Council’s proposals to ban dogs from parts of Wirral’s beaches and parks.

Wirral Council’s consultation on the Dog Control Public Spaces Protection Orders ends on Sunday 15th July 2018.
